With a dark and unsettling undertone of 1960s paranoia, Spov’s work for Call of Duty: Black Ops has long been admired for its originality. Building on the mind of the protagonist, a special ops soldier under interrogation, the visuals are at times woozy, and at others frightening as the interrogation progresses and the narrative unfolds. Spov based the visuals on period technology – microfiche files (pre-computer miniaturised data storage) and nixie tubes (electric pre-cursors to LEDs). Tense editing and sometimes unsettling archive imagery add to the unique experience.
